As I walked across the lobby of the Association building, I rotated my shoulders which had gone stiff from all my nervousness. Because of the odd hour, there was hardly anyone in the usually bustling lobby.
When I first came to the capital, the Association building was an imposing place, but even I managed to get used to it after five years.
There was the quest boardâ I gave it a sideways glance as I passed it by. There was the news boardâ I gave it a sideways glance as I passed it by. There was the bounty boardâ I gave it a sideways glance as I passed it by.
I already knew that there was nothing I could do to fulfill a Level 8âs quota all by myself. I walked about the lobby and I checked in front of the counter, the appraisal desk, and the library, and still didnât find what I was looking for. I let out a deep sigh.
I was looking for protection. To be more specific, I was looking for hunters with the mark of the First Steps who might help me. As a general rule, I didnât like going outside by myself. The roads you take to go from the Explorerâs Association to our clan house were often crowded, and it was just about guaranteed that I wouldnât be attacked going between the two buildings. But I still didnât want to risk it.
When I would leave the clan house for my own purposes, Iâd find a good enough bodyguard and give them a good enough reason to come along with me. I n other words, I only went out when I had protection.
However, after being abducted by Gark I was left with few options but to go home unaccompanied. On the way to the Association it had been fine because Gark was with me, but I would have to brave the return trip by myself. Of course, I was equipped perfectly; I was covered head-to-toe in Relics, but that was more of a placebo.
âGood grief, I wish Gark wouldnât always call upon me so suddenly. It wasnât even that urgent.â I grumbled. âI know about my quota, he doesnât need to tell me.â
I jangled the chain at my waist and peeked out the lobby door to the world outside. In front of the Association building was a street wide enough for multiple carriages to pass through. Merchant carriages bustled this way and that and pedestrians squinted in the blinding sun. Nobody seemed to be feeling the same unease that I was.
The scenery alleviated a bit of my tension. It was strange for a hunterâ which I technically wasâ to be so nervous when even civilians were without fear.
I guess I have no choice. Surely nothingâs going to happen.
I puffed up my chest and put on a calm facade before mustering my courage and taking a bold step outside.
Within Zebrudia, a decent amount of prestige came with being a high-level hunter. The term âhunterâ encompassed a group of people with widely varying jobs, levels of experience, and specialties.
